Edition 5
Principal's Message
L
Welcome back to Term Three! While the weather is a tad chilly at present, it is great to see so many smiling faces return this week. With changes to the COVID vaccination rules, we are able to welcome visitors to our school who are currently not vaccinated. In order to volunteer in classrooms, all parent/carers must complete a mandatory face to face session with our Deputy Principal, Mr Morley. These sessions run in weeks 5 and 10 of each term. Should you wish to volunteer in your child’s classroom and are yet to complete the mandatory training, please contact your child’s teacher. If you have completed a session with Mr Morley, please remember to sign in and out at Executive Services. Your sign in sticker is to be worn at all times once signed in to ensure staff and students are aware that you are authorised to be on school grounds.
SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY
All existing families should have received an email from me on Tuesday night with information about this year’s School Opinion Survey.
Welcome back to Term 3. It is the time of year where parents/carers are invited to participate in the School Opinion Survey. The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted from 18 July to 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5,6,8 and 11) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve. The Department of Education will commence sending email invitations to participants in the first week of Term 3.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
The School Opinion Survey is open until Friday, 12 August 2022.To have your say, check your email for an invitation from the Department of Education titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022.
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
Please contact me should you have any questions.

Deputy Principals' Message
NAIDOC WEEK
Students across the school are recognising NAIDOC Week this week. NAIDOC Week is recognised each year to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. This year the theme is Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up. This theme is developed to identify the need to move beyond just acknowledgement, good intentions, empty words and promises, and hollow commitments and work to develop the relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non‑Indigenous Australians. This relationship needs to be based on justice, equity, and the proper recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights. At Everleigh State School, we were privileged to have Aunty Robyn Williams deliver a Welcome to Country on Wednesday during our special parade.
We continued our celebrations with students decorating their own boomerang with Aboriginal symbols and Australian animals, and then learning how to throw a boomerang. Thanks to the local Greenbank Skeen family for continuing our celebrations with our students and staff.
As you can see from these photos, our students enjoyed these activities immensely and we would encourage all of our Parents and Carers to ask their children to share what they have learned from our NAIDOC week celebrations.
PBL – POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING
Each week, classes focus a lesson around Everleigh’s Expectations of Excellence. This week, our students are focussing on aiming for their personal best in all activities. Throughout the week, students have been reviewing their goals within their behaviour and effort and identifying how they can make improvements. Students identify key elements that they feel they need to develop, discuss this with their teacher and agree on a goal and a target for them to reach. Students are also encouraged to ensure this goal is shared with family as sharing our goals with others increases the likelihood of being successful at it.
Students collect CARE Credits throughout the term to reflect positive actions they are showing and particularly for succeeding in their identified goal. At the end of the term, students' progression towards their goals gains them access to our PBL Acknowledgement Day. We have three levels of acknowledgement. Our first level is for students who are still working towards their goal. Our second level is for students who have met their goal and the third level is achieved by students who meet their target throughout the term and a ‘stretch’ goal is set. Students who reach their stretch goal are recognised as exceeding their goal. Last term saw students have an extended play at school at first level, extended play at the park for second level and those exceeding their goals also receiving pizza. We will be discussing what this term’s acknowledgement activity looks like at the P&C Meeting.

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK
As part of our National Science Week celebrations, the students have the opportunity to attend a show coming to our school. The show will be held in week 6 on the 15th August.
STREET SCIENCE celebrates National Science Week 2022 ‘Glass: More than meets the eye’ with our smashing stage show ‘BREAKING POINT’, touring across Queensland from August.
Glass: it’s been around for centuries and is everywhere in our lives – windows, doors, eyewear, screens; not a day goes by without touching glass… but what exactly is this marvellous material?
In this all-new action-packed show, Street Science will crack open the science of glass, with our presenters exploring common questions about how it’s made and used. Audiences will get CHARGED UP learning lightning's role, ogle over the optics of glasses and magnification, and have a smashing good time testing the strengths and weakness of the glass types we interact with every single day.
This epic show has been designed and specifically tailored to align with the 2022 National Science Week school’s theme. Your students will gain exciting insights into the chemistry, physics, and sustainability of this valuable resource, complementing curriculum learnings in a way they’ll never forget.
The cost to bring the show to Everleigh State School is $11 per student. If you would like your child to attend, please also complete the permission form below. Please note that the cut off for ALL payments is Wednesday 11 August. No late payments via BPoint or at the school office will be accepted to ensure all payments are processed prior to the event.
Permission forms will be sent home on Monday.

Instrumental Music
Everleigh State School’s Instrumental Music Program is in full swing with our young musicians participating in their very first Concert Band rehearsal! Throughout the first half of this year students have been working hard learning their chosen instrument in small lesson groups and this term is the first time they have come all together to play as an ensemble. In Week 9, students will workshop these new ensemble skills with Park Ridge SHS musicians and begin preparing for their first performance.

100 DAYS COLOUR EXPLOSION FUN RUN
We are excited for our Colour Run on Monday 1 August. Thank you for continuing to support our school with the Colour Explosion School Fun Run.
It is our responsibility to seek permission for your child to participate in the Colour Explosion School Fun Run. A permission form has been sent home to all families this week. Please return these slips to Executive Services.
All measures have been taken to ensure that this event is safe for all students. The colour powder is made from 98% corn starch and 2% food colouring, making it non-toxic, biodegradable and gluten-free.
The staff will do their best to aim the powder towards the torso. However, wind may cause the powder to protrude onto your child’s face or hair. Sunglasses will be provided for students on the day.
Ingredient listings and toxicology risk assessments are available. Students with lung conditions such as asthma are advised to be careful in their decision to participate.
The colour powder will likely wash out of your child’s clothing. Never the less, we recommend that your child wears a plain white shirt that you don’t mind being coloured. More detailed information will be sent out closer to the date.
Get ready for the brightest day at school! Thank you again for your support and happy fundraising.
