Principal's Message
Principal’s Message
This term and year are flying before our eyes! It is difficult to imagine that it was only 6 months ago we opened with restrictions and wearing masks!
HEALTH AND SAFETY OF STAFF, STUDENTS, AND OUR WIDER COMMUNITY
I would like to remind everyone that COVID is still in our community and the flu is also very prevalent. While we want students to be attending school, the health and wellbeing of all is paramount. We have several families and staff members who are either personally medically vulnerable or their immediate family are vulnerable. Please remember any student who is unwell, particularly with COVID/flu like symptoms should be tested and remain at home. QLD Health guidelines still require individuals to either use a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) or PCR where COVID symptoms present. We have a stock of RATs available for students who develop symptoms at school. Once tested, it is a requirement that any positive result be reported to both QLD Health and the school. Please visit https://qed.qld.gov.au/covid19 for school management of COVID-19 or https://www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19 for up to date information on COVID-19. It is also important to be aware of the close contact rules in place for individuals who are negative. If a student becomes a close contact, they must be tested on days 0, 2, 4 and 6. Students can continue attending school if they return a negative test. Please visit https://www.qld.gov.au/health/conditions/health-alerts/coronavirus-covid-19/exposed-to-covid/close-contacts/guidelines-for-close-contacts-in-queensland for more information on close contact rules in Queensland.
In addition to COVID-19, there are a number of other ‘notifiable’ contagious health conditions. A notifiable health condition is one that must be reported to the school and then communicated to the school community due to its potential severity or contagious properties. Some notifiable illnesses also have an exclusion period. The following illnesses MUST be reported to the school upon positive confirmation from a health practitioner:
- coronavirus (COVID-19)
- diphtheria
- enterovirus 71 neurological disease
- gastroenteritis
- haemophilus influenza type b (invasive)
- hepatitis A
- human influenza with pandemic potential
- measles
- meningococcal infection (invasive)
- paratyphoid and typhoid,
- pertussis (whooping cough)
- poliomyelitis infection
- rubella
- tuberculosis
- varicella – zoster virus infection (chickenpox)
Further information regarding symptoms, exclusion periods and reporting guidelines, please see Time Out Poster.
STOP, DROP, GO – KANGAROO CARPARK
We have a number of parents/carers who are not adhering to the 2-minute parking zone signage. Over the past few weeks, we have received numerous complaints about parents/carers who are parking within the 2-minute zones on the outskirts of the Kangaroo Carpark and walking into to collect their children. This is not permitted. If you need to walk into the school grounds to collect your child/ren, please park in the car park proper, not in the 2-minute waiting zones. Thank you to those parents/carers who are following the rules to CARE for the safety of our students. Should you have any concerns, please contact me to discuss them. Repeat offenders’ details are being collected and I am working with our local Adopt-A-Cop and Logan City Council on ways to ensure the appropriate and safe use of our car park.
I would like to remind parents/carers that while you have good intentions in doing so, it is not appropriate to approach other parents/carers to discuss these issues. Please record details (not photographs) and pass them on to me via Executive Services.
END OF TERM
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support this semester. As this is the final newsletter for the term, I wish you all a safe winter break. School holidays commence on Friday 24 June, with Term Three commencing on Monday 11 July.
Deputy Principals' Message
CELEBRATION OF LEARNING AFTERNOON
Next week you are invited to attend your child’s classroom between 1:30 – 2:30 for our celebration of learning afternoon. Classes will have different ways of sharing the terms learning with you. You will also have the opportunity to look at your child’s learning folio with your child and to reflect on the learning and set goals for the following term. This is a time to be with your child and celebrate their hard work through the semester. In Week 3 of Term 3 we have Parent Teacher interviews where you can discuss the folio and your child's progress confidentially with your child’s class teacher. If you wish to speak to your child’s teacher before this time, please send them a See Saw message to make an appointment time.
SEMESTER 1 REPORTING
Semester 1 Report Cards are due to be shared with parents in week 1 of Term 3. These reports will be a reflection of the students’ progress over the semester. There is some information below for families on how students are graded and what teachers use to arrive at the grades allocated to your child.
Reporting is based on Evidence
Schools report to parents on student achievement twice a year, against the relevant achievement standards for each learning area or subject, according to the Australian Curriculum.
Reports reflect:
- judgments about the quality of student learning based on evidence collected during the reporting period, and
- the student’s most consistent level of achievement during that reporting period i.e. Semester 1 or Semester 2.
The evidence of each student’s achievement is collected using a range of assessments aligned to the Australian Curriculum.
A level of achievement is then awarded using a five-point scale. The five-point scale for each year level is as follows:
Prep | APPLYING | MAKING CONNECTIONS | WORKING WITH | EXPLORING | BECOMING AWARE |
Years 1 - 3 | VERY HIGH | HIGH | SOUND | DEVELOPING | SUPPORT REQUIRED |
Years 4 - 6 | A | B | C | D | E |
Achieving a ‘C’ (‘Working With’ / ‘Sound’) in Achievement on the report card means that your child has met the appropriate criteria for that year level. Any student who shows sufficient evidence of meeting the required criteria for a particular level – whether it be a ‘C’, ‘A’ or ‘B’ – will be allocated that grade.
Therefore, students allocated a ‘C’ demonstrate that they are achieving the expected level of knowledge and understanding for their year level, based on the criteria set out in the Australian Curriculum. So, a “C” means that the student’s academic development is exactly where it needs to be and that they are well placed, ready to progress into Semester Two, in preparation for the next year’s learning.
If you have any questions around the grades allocated to your child please contact your child’s teacher and arrange a time to meet with them during our parent teacher meetings in week 3 of Term 3, allowing you the opportunity to view evidence of learning and to discuss how you can work together to further improve your child’s learning progress.
PBL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT DAY
Students have had individual goals around their behaviours throughout term 2 and have been working towards meeting that goal. Students collect CARE Credits throughout class and whilst in the playground as they move towards being successful in what they identified as an area of focus. Over the course of the term, students have met and exceeded these goals. As acknowledgement of their efforts, students have been invited along to a play in the park on Tuesday, June 21. Preps-Year 2 students will be at the park between 12pm and 2pm while years 3-6 will be at the park between 10am-12pm. Students will engage in a range of activities guided by teachers and those who have exceeded their targets will also enjoy pizza in the park.
HOLIDAY READING
As we approach the holidays some parents worry about continuing to support their child’s reading progress during this time.
Holiday time can be a constant juggling act. You want to go out for day trips, or you may be travelling or visiting relatives. All of this at the same time as encouraging your child to read the books they have brought home from school and keeping their motivation and enjoyment of reading up as much as possible.
Below are some simple suggestions of ways you can continue to support your child’s readings progress through the holidays.
1. Connect with new and interesting reading material
Visit the council library for the free holiday’s activities and take these opportunity for children to choose some new books to read, many libraries also have levelled readers that students can choose and read themselves but if your child chooses a book that is too tricky for them to read independently then read it to them or share the reading.
2. Get online
Don’t forget that students can continue to access their Reading Eggs subscription online over the holidays. Ensure that they have their user name and password. There is also so many ebooks online and interactive reading sites that you and your child could explore together.
3. Out and about
When you are out and about in the car, on the bus or out for a walk, see how many signs you can spot; road signs, street signs, brochures and timetables… Read them together with your child. These purposeful reading activities help children to see reading as a life skill important for them now and in the future.
4. Encourage imaginative play
Playing on the holidays is a great way for students to continue their reading and writing development. Whether they are making a cubby that you can fill with books for them to read, or they are pretending their room is a medical centre, these are great opportunities for children to practise reading and writing skills. Encourage them to make signs, source life like reading materials and engage in the life like literacy tasks of their play space. By playing with them you can suggest and encourage more reading and writing through their play.
Message from Executive Services
OUTSTANDING STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME (SRS) FEES/RENT TO OWN IPAD SCHEME
Currently there are still a few families with outstanding SRS and/or rent to own IPAD fees. Statements were emailed to families with outstanding fees at the end of last month. These are now required to be paid immediately in full to ensure continuing access for your student to the resources provided under the scheme.
This does not apply to families who have chosen to pay in installments or have a current payment plan with the school. If you are having financial difficulties, please contact the school to arrange a payment.
A big thank you to those families who have been prompt with payments.
HPE Matters with Mr Johnson
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Week nine, time to shine!
The Senior Sports Day (3-6) was held on Wednesday 15th June. The day was a participation event and trial where students were encouraged to have a go and try to achieve set benchmarks. There was colour, students proudly wearing and displaying their Sports House, Sun-Yellow, Earth-Red, Water-Blue, Wind-Green. Place-getters were determined in sprint races and field events. The students rotated through the 4 key track and field events. There was jumps in the sand and onto the mat, shots pushed from shoulders and speedy sprints. We had some break out activities like relays, athletic circuits and throw games for groups who finished early and for extending skills.
The Junior Sports Day (P-2) was held on Friday 17th June. Our primary objective was to provide all students with the opportunity to participate to their level of ability. The day was full of colour, smiles of excitement and good cheer. Place getters were determined in sprint races. The students showed great teamwork during the ballgames, with different movement patterns, Over & Under, Zig & Zag and the popular Tunnel Ball. The students were allocated points during the tabloids when they demonstrated a fair attempt. They experienced a variety of throws, jumps and novelty activities. There was so much action at our six stations 1) Hurdles 2) Sack race 3) Egg and spoon 4) Ball bounce 5) Javelin throw 6) Frisbee throw
A BIG Thanks to our staff, students, parents/carers and community for your support and assistance with our athletics season and sports days. I hope you have a relaxing winter break with family and friends.
Yours in sport,
Dave Johnson

From the Sports Captains
Sun and Earth - Jason and Chanel
The Sun and Earth captains wish to thank everyone who participated in the senior and junior athletics carnivals this week. The efforts and energy of students who participated earned us points and helped to push us through to success. We look forward to finding out the overall outcome next Tuesday at the special assembly. A highlight was watching students in all age groups participate and put in their best efforts throughout all events. All our students showed they CARE.
Wind and Water Break - Riley and Karson
The Wind and Water captains would like to thank teachers and staff for their efforts in setting up the athletics carnivals and making them wonderful events. We’d also like to thank the parents who came along to support students who participated on the day. One of the highlights of the day for Wind and Water was the screaming and shouting that our house showed during their war cries. It was amazing to see this passion from students in our houses.
Music Notes with Mrs Chivers
We are in the midst of a very creative time in music as our students improvise and compose new songs and rhythms.
Our choir is sounding great and are almost ready for their debut at the last parade of term. We would love more students to join next term. Don’t forget we rehearse every Tuesday at second break.
