Edition 32
Principal's Message
Welcome Mr Robert Bradford
Due to our Year 5 and Year 5/6 classes all being oversized, we are fortunate enough to have Mr Robert Bradford join the Everleigh State School team for the remainder of this year. Mr Bradford has experience teaching students of this age group and will work to support Mr Alexandrou, Ms Suter and Mrs Davis in their classrooms. From time to time Mr Bradford will replace these teachers to allow them time to work on the larger volume of marking and assessments as a result of our class sizes.
I am sure you will be very supportive and welcoming of Mr Bradford to our school.
2024 planning
As I have shared with you, we are well underway in planning for 2024. This week’s Teachers’ Staff Meeting was focused around creating classes for 2024. Based on our current and predicted student enrolments, there will be a number of composite classes. The decision to create composite classes is never an easy one and a great deal of time and effort is taken when identifying students to be placed into a composite class.
Despite what may be thought of, composite classes ARE NOT:
- Selecting students who are working below year level expectation in order to ‘redo’ their previous year level.
- Placing students who are working above year level with students in the year level above.
- Randomly selecting ‘left over’ students.
Composite classes are created with thought, taking into account:
- Students with a range of academic achievements.
- Students’ ability to work (age appropriate) independently.
We are expected to have approximately 550 students at the beginning of next year. Potential class formations for 2024 are as follows. Decisions regarding what year levels teachers will be teaching in 2024 are yet to be finalised.
- 4 Prep classes and a Prep/Year One composite.
- 4 Year One classes, Prep/Year One composite and Year One/Year Two composite.
- 4 Year Two classes and a Year One/Year Two composite.
- 2 Year Three classes and a Year Three/Year Four composite.
- 2 Year Four classes and a Year Three/Year Four composite.
- 5 Year Five/Year Six classes.
Our teachers know their students very well and use this knowledge when identifying students for a composite class. I can assure all parents that a great deal of time and effort is taken when creating new classes each year. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding 2024 class formations, please contact your child’s teacher in the first instance.
Use of toilets during class time
Attending school is about teaching and learning, and our department's new Strategic Plan has a focus on maximising learning days. This not only includes attending school all day, everyday for the entire school day, it also includes the amount of time spent in classrooms. Today I sent an email to all staff about the importance of students accessing toilets BEFORE school and AFTER each break when our music sounds to signal it is time to prepare for learning. Within a ten (10) minute period, I witnessed approximately 10 students accessing the toilets during learning time not long after a break ended. I have reminded staff to ensure students are using the toilets at appropriate times and reteach our school's ACCOUNTABILITY expectation of 'We use toilets at break times when we can'. While it is understandable that there are times where students need to use the toilets during class time, and students will not be denied access to using the toilets, there should be no need for students to be using toilets within 15 minutes of a learning session commencing. You can assist by:
- Ensuring your child arrives at school with sufficient time to use the toilets before the school day commences.
- Reminding your child to use the toilets at appropriate times throughout the day.
- Communicating any medical conditions impacting on your child's need to access the toilets on a more regular basis.
End of Year Concert
If you have not already, please mark the afternoon/evening of Thursday, 23 November in your diary! iPad Program
On Tuesday November 21 at 6.00 pm in 5/6C, we will be holding an iPad information session for parents to attend. This session will focus on why iPads are being used for learning in classrooms at Everleigh State School and the benefits within. We will also discuss iPad setup and how appropriate use is monitored and checked to ensure they are used as intended – as a learning tool. Please register your interest by completing this survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/77HMNC6
PBL
Our PBL Processes have been undergoing review throughout the year in order to ensure our processes are continually updating to reflect the needs of our students and community. Thank you very much for parents who participated in the PBL survey that was sent out earlier in the term. Your feedback is extremely valuable. Our PBL team meet three times each term and we would appreciate having greater input from our parent body. If you would be interested in attending and potentially joining our PBL team, please contact Mr Morley.
Every Day Counts – lets finish strong!
Our school target for attendance is 95% and we are currently at 88.9%. This means that, on average, students have missed 20 days or 4 weeks of learning across the year! If this were to continue, students would miss the equivalent of a whole year of learning throughout their school career.
With only 25 school days left for 2023, let’s work together to prioritise attendance at school every day!
We know that illness, injury and personal circumstances sometimes arise but is a requirement that parents/carers provide an explanation for all absences. For the remainder of the year, every student in a class with no unexplained absences will receive an ice block on Mondays. Please ensure you notify the student absence line 07 2899 5160 or contact your child’s teacher so they can update the roll.
This fortnights attendance is:
Cohort | % Year to date | This fortnight |
Prep | 90.17 | 89.34 |
Year 1 | 90.16 | 91.13 |
Year 2 | 89.83 | 88.54 |
Year 3 | 87.02 | 82.40 |
Year 4 | 87.23 | 89.81 |
Year 5 | 88.80 | 88.08 |
Year 6 | 84.60 |
Congratulations to this edition’s Attendance Champions – Year 1!

Attendance Data Collection
Attendance data for Term 3 2023 will be extracted by Central Office on Friday 27th October. It is important that any outstanding unexplained absences are updated. Each Monday we send home letters to families who have unexplained absences. We kindly ask that you advise the reasons for the absence and return these letters as soon as possible.
We remind parents/carers to ensure absences are notified by 9am on the day of the absence, to avoid creating an unexplained absence.
Student Absence Procedure
If your student will be absent, parents/carers have a legal obligation to notify the school, including advising the reason for the absence. We kindly request you let us know by 9am on the day of the absence. We have two preferred methods for advising absence:
- Via the Q-Parents App – please see reception if you require information on this.
- Via our dedicated Student Absence Line – (07) 2899 5160, where you can leave a message any time of the day or night. Please save this number in your phone.
Reminder: You will also need to advise YMCA if your child is booked in and will be absent.
YMCA absences should be advised before 2:15pm via email aev@ymcabrisbane.org or via text or phone call 0459 905 087.
Don’t forget to also cancel your canteen order if you have pre-ordered ahead: (07) 2899 5125
2024 Student Resource Scheme (SRS)
The Student Resource Scheme (SRS) is a user‐charging scheme operated by schools to provide parents with a mechanism to access individual student resources that are not funded by the government. Government funding for schools does not extend to individual student resources and equipment for their personal use or consumption. Supply of these items, such as textbooks and personal laptops/iPads, is the responsibility of the parent.
The objective of the scheme is to provide parents a convenient and cost‐ effective alternative to individual supply of resources for their students.
For all year levels this includes:
- Discounted access to online learning platforms to complement the curriculum. These resources can be accessed at home and at school.
- Payment towards bulk purchase of arts and crafts materials.
- Purchase and supply of all stationery and booklist items at a reduced cost to parents due to the school being able to buy items in bulk. This cost includes used items being replenished throughout the year as required.
- Any relevant handwriting text books.
- Purchase of relevant year level apps for iPads
The cost of the SRS for 2024, which we will invoice shortly for is as below:
2024 all-inclusive SRS costs | |||
Year Level | Cost | Year Level | Cost |
Year 1 | $195 | Year 4 | $160 |
Year 2 | $190 | Year 5 | $155 |
Year 3 | $175 | Year 6 | $145 |
To assist the school in covering the large upfront cost of purchasing student stationery, booklist items and iPads, a deposit, full payment or part payment will be required by 23 February 2024.
For parents/carers who have opted to hire an iPad the cost per year of $130 will remain the same for 2024.
The SRS Participation Agreement Form was completed upon an enrolment. If you no longer wish to participate in the SRS, you are required to notify the school in writing.
Student Accounts
Thank you to those parents and carers who have already made payment. Your support of our school is greatly appreciated.
Account statements were emailed to families on 18 October 2023. As the end of the year is fast approaching, we urge families to attend to any outstanding fees.
The preferred payment method is via, Bpoint or Q Parents. Payments can also be made via Eftpos between 8am and 3pm at the office.
If you would like to set up a payment plan or have any concerns regarding your account, please contact the Admin Team by phoning the Admin Office on 07 2895111 or emailing
Spare change of clothes reminder
Please ensure you have a spare change of clothes in your child’s bag in case of accidents. Please include underwear, black shorts/skort and socks.
Lost property
Name labels make all the difference in helping us to returned lost items to the correct students. We kindly remind parents to name hats, lunch boxes, water bottles, etc. We really appreciate your assistance with this. Please see the attached photos of current treasures waiting for their owners to claim them.
Note: All unclaimed items will be donated or binned at the end of each term.
Q Parents
We invite all parents and carers to set up their Q Parents app. This app is our preferred option and is a one-stop location to check on your account or pay invoices, as well as to report absences. It is quick and easy to use. If you require any assistance to set this up, please contact executive services.
UMS Uniforms
Due to the busy period in January and to avoid long waiting times, UMS encourage families to purchase their uniforms in Term Four 2023.
