Edition 29
Principal's Message
We have one week left of what has been a very busy Term 3. I am sure Term 4 will be just as busy as we round out our second year at Everleigh State School.
Parent/Carer waiting areas prior to 2.30 pm
Parents/Carers are reminded to not wait outside of classrooms of an afternoon. The designated waiting area for all parents/carers is in the covered area near Administration and the Canteen. It is quite distracting to both staff and students when parents/carers are waiting outside of classroom, particularly when having conversations or taking phone calls. When the bell rings at 2.30 pm, you are more than welcome to meet your child outside of their classroom.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
Thank you to all of the parents/carers who attended our Parent-Teacher interviews last Wednesday. This was a great opportunity for your child’s teacher to share in their learning to date and areas they continue to focus for improvement.
2024 Planning
Planning for 2024 has commenced. If your child will not be with us next year (excluding Year 6 students), can you please contact Administration on 2899 2111 or email at admin@everleighss.eq.edu.au . Alternatively, if you have a son or daughter starting Prep in 2024 and you are yet to collect enrolment forms, please contact us immediately. Please also share with any friends or family members who have children they intend enrolling at Everleigh State School to contact us as soon as possible.
iPads, Digital Devices and student access to social media
We live in an age of digital accessibility and connectivity. While COVID had a detrimental impact on many areas of our daily lives, one positive has been the push for the effective use of digital technologies in schools and our daily lives. However, this comes with many challenges. This term in particular, we have had to manage the inappropriate use of iPads at school. This has included taking photos without the permission of other students, recording of conversations, searching for and sharing inappropriate pictures. As some internet searches would be blocked by the filter applied to our school’s internet access, it leads us to believe that some students are bringing iPads to school with SIM cards. This is in breach of our iPad user agreement and may result in students being banned from bringing their iPad to school. This will have impacts on students’ abilities to access some learning activities.
In addition, a number of students also have access to apps such as TikTok and Snapchat, which has an age restriction and should not be being used by primary aged students. These apps have been used outside of school hours to send threatening messages to other students.
Please take the time to discuss with your child the importance of internet safety and appropriate use of technology.
Deputy Principals' Message
Junior Leaders’ Parliamentary Tour
Last week our two school captains had the opportunity to attend Queensland’s Parliament House on a special tour guided by Mrs Charis Mullen, MP for Jordan. Our school leaders received a personalised tour with special access. Our student leaders were most impressed by the parliamentary library as it reminded them of Beauty and the Beast.
The event was also an opportunity for our school leaders to meet with other students from our local schools. All students listened to important messages of leadership and also unpack the democratic processes in Queensland and the history of our parliament.
Talk Like A Pirate
Students across the school are invited to dress like a pirate on September 15th. Parents can donate at https://fundraise.ccs.org.au/fundraisers/everleighstateschoolstudentcouncil. All funds raised will go towards Childhood Cancer Support who provide accommodation, transport and counselling for families who unfortunately have a child diagnosed with cancer from rural and remote areas. Students can participate in the day by participating in a colouring in competition, drawing competition or story writing competition.
Celebrating Success
During the last weeks of term our students will be completing assessment and receiving feedback on their learning progress. This is a time to celebrate the progress they have made towards achieving their learning goals. Please take the time to talk with your child about their learning it may be a good opportunity to ask them:
- What are you learning?
- How are you doing?
- How do you know?
- How can you improve?
- Where do you go for help?
Ensure you celebrate all the work they have done and the progress they have made. We are very proud of all our students.
Respectful Relationships
Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting children and young people to establish respectful relationships. Having regular conversations about what positive, healthy and equal relationships look like helps children and young people build self-respect and learn to be respectful to others. Learn more about the role parents, carers and schools play in supporting students to develop respectful relationships on the RRE hub.
Prep Start Transition Session
Our Prep Start transition sessions for our 2024 Prep families will begin on Thursday in Week Three next term. Please ensure you register your child for this at the school office as soon as possible so you don’t miss out. Spaces are limited. If you have a child starting prep next year please contact the school for information.
Prep Father Day Afternoon Tea
Last Thursday our Prep classes welcomed fathers and special people to come join in on activities to celebrate Father’s Day. We thank all those who attended and made this a memorable afternoon. Having opportunities for families together and be a part of our learning environment helps us to build a great school culture and sense of community.
Every Day Counts!
Attendance at school every day is critical for long-term success. Our school target for attendance is 95 per cent. This is based on our understanding that illness, injury and personal circumstances sometimes arise. An attendance rate of 95 per cent equates to ten (10) missed days, or two weeks, of learning per year.
Cohort | % Year to date | This fortnight |
Prep | 90.68 | 93.33 |
Year 1 | 90.28 | 92.17 |
Year 2 | 90.17 | 93.18 |
Year 3 | 86.64 | 89.77 |
Year 4 | 87.26 | 90.33 |
Year 5 | 88.19 | 86.66 |
Year 6 | 84.77 |
Congratulations to this edition’s Attendance Champions – Prep!
It is reassuring to see our attendance rates increasing again. Let’s keep striving for attendance all day every day!
Messages from Executive Services
Student Absence Procedure
If your student will be absent, parents/carers have an obligation to notify the school, including advising the reason for the absence. We kindly request you let us know by 9am on the day of the absence. We have two preferred methods for advising absence:
- Via the Q-Parents App – please see reception if you require information on this.
- Via our dedicated Student Absence Line – (07) 2899 5160, where you can leave a message any time of the day or night. Please save this number in your phone.
Reminder: You will also need to advise YMCA if your child is booked in and will be absent.
YMCA absences should be advised before 2:15pm via email aev@ymcabrisbane.org or via text or phone call 0459 905 087.
Don’t forget to also cancel your canteen order if you have pre-ordered ahead: (07) 2899 5125
Spare change of clothes reminder
Please ensure you have a spare change of clothes in your child’s bag in case of accidents. Please include underwear, black shorts/skort and socks.
Lost property
Before you put away your jackets for the warmer season, please check your labels to ensure they belong to you. We have a number of parents looking for lost jackets, that have their children’s names on them. If you have something that does not belong to you, please return it to the office.
Name labels make all the difference in helping us to returned lost items to the correct students. We kindly remind parents to name jackets, lunch boxes, water bottles, containers and also hats. We really appreciate your assistance with this. Please see the attached photos of current treasures waiting for their owners to claim them.
We also have a table near the front entry gates where we leave other lost property such as lunch boxes, water bottles and non-Everleigh jumpers and tracksuit pants.
All unclaimed items will be donated or binned at the end of each term.
Q Parents
We invite all parents and carers to set up their Q Parents app. This app is our preferred option and is a one-stop location to check on your account or pay invoices, as well as to report absences. It is quick and easy to use. If you require any assistance to set this up, please contact executive services.
