Edition 20
Principal's Message
Welcome back to Term 2!
I trust everyone had an opportunity to spend time with family and friends. I am pleased to report, as you see driving to and from school, that the footpath on the school side of Ivory Parkway has reopened! As such, if your child walks to school, please ensure they use this footpath to avoid crossing too many roads.
I would like to again remind families of our Everleigh State School uniform expectations, which includes school bags, hats, shoes and socks.
All students are expected to wear our school uniform every day. Please see below our school uniform policy. Part of our uniform policy includes students wearing black shoes and white socks. There has been an increase in students wearing black or other coloured socks. All students are expected to wear our school bucket hat, which can be purchased from the uniform shop. In the event your child misplaces their hat, a plain black hat can be worn until the school hat is found or replaced. Please ensure your child’s hat along with other belongings is clearly labelled.
While the Everleigh State School school bag is not compulsory, we strongly encourage it. This school bag is of a suitable size and durable. In the event a school bag is not used, a plain black school bag of similar size is expected to be used.
We have been informed that winter jackets are on back order. While waiting for orders to arrive, students are permitted to wear a plain black or grey jumper. Hoodies are not to be worn.

The student council will not be carrying any change so please make sure you tender what you wish to give. For families wishing to donate online, please click here.
Our school leaders will be attending the Brisbane City State Schools ANZAC Day Ceremony on April 24th.
All students are invited to attend and march with Everleigh State School at the Greenbank ANZAC Day service. Everleigh State School will be forming up at 09:30am on Blackwell Street for the march. The service will begin at 10:30am. For students participating in the march, full school uniform is required.
Gala Day
Everleigh State School will be participating in our first Gala Day of 2023 will be occurring on May 12th. Students in Years 5 and 6 will be involved in Newcombe and Touch at external locations. Notes have been issued to students participating. Remaining students who are not involved in interschool sport will participate in school-based activities with students in year 4.
Sun Safety
Students are required to wear hats whilst at schools for all activities occurring in areas that do not have a hard cover for shade as well as during play. HPE will incorporate many activities on the oval throughout this term as students develop athletics skills in the build up to sports carnivals. Please make sure students bring their hats to school; have their hats labelled and wear them to stay safe from the sun.
Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
Students in Years 4-6 will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey. This will take place in classrooms during Week 3 commencing Monday 1st May.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The QEW Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across different topics. The information we get from the survey helps us better understand and support our students.
An information letter has been sent via email and SeeSaw to families in Years 4-6. If you have any questions, please contact the school. More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website: (https://qed.qld.gov.au/publications/reports/statistics/schooling/students/queensland-engagement-wellbeing-survey).
Every Day Counts!
Attendance at school every day is critical for long-term success. Our school target for attendance is 95 per cent. This is based on our understanding that illness, injury and personal circumstances sometimes arise. An attendance rate of 95 per cent equates to ten (10) missed days of learning per year. Our attendance rates since last newsletter are:
Prep 92.7%
Year 1 89.1%
Year 2 91.6%
Year 3 88.8%
Year 4 84.0%
Years 5 & 6 89.5%
Congratulations to this edition’s Attendance Champions - Prep!
You’re invited to Everleigh State School’s Under 8’s Day!
Wednesday 17th May: 8:45am – 10:45am, Junior school learning areas
On Wednesday 17th May, our students in Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 will be celebrating Under 8’s Day.
Under 8s was initiated by Early Childhood Australia, Queensland. They wanted to create a day that was dedicated to highlighting the importance of play for learning and development. Children’s brains develop rapidly in the first eight years of life and experiences during this time lay the foundation for future learning and development.
Children are born investigators and Under 8s Day is a time to nurture that natural curiosity and playfulness. The students will be participating in a range of visual, creative and movement based interactive activities which will be set up around our learning spaces. The activities will run from 8:45am through until 10:45am.
We would love for you to attend this special event to continue building strong partnerships between our school and the local community. This year’s theme is Play – you, me and our communities and we would love for you to join us to celebrate this special occasion designed to embrace the joy of early childhood. Younger siblings and children younger than Prep age are welcome to attend with a parent or guardian and the invitation will be extended to early childhood education and care centres in our local community.
If you have a special talent or activity that you would like to share with our students, please get in touch via email at aarms55@eq.edu.au. Any support is greatly appreciated.
We look forward to a fun morning of activities with our local community!

Student Absences
With the weather becoming cooler in the mornings, we are seeing an increase of illness at school. While we value attendance, please be reminded to keep unwell children home, so as to allow them time to recover as well as to stop the spread.
If your student will be absent, parents/carers have a legal obligation to notify the school, including advising the reason for the absence. We kindly request you let us know by 9am on the day of the absence. We have two preferred methods for advising absence:
- Via the Q-Parents App – please see reception if you require information on this.
- Via our dedicated Student Absence Line – (07) 2899 5160, where you can leave a message any time of the day or night. Please save this number in your phone.
Reminder: You will also need to advise YMCA if your child is booked in and will be absent.
YMCA absences should be advised before 2:15pm via email aev@ymcabrisbane.org or via text or phone call 0459 905 087.
Don’t forget to also cancel your canteen order if you have pre-ordered ahead: (07) 2899 5125
2022 Yearbooks
If you ordered and have not yet collected your 2022 Yearbook, they are still available for collection at Executive Services.
Lost property
Name labels make all the difference in helping us to returned lost items to the correct students. We kindly remind parents to name lunch boxes, water bottles, containers and also hats. We really appreciate your assistance with this. Please see the attached photos of recent treasures waiting for their owners to claim them.
STOP, DROP and GO Zones
We now have name tags for you to attach to your car sun visor which will allow our staff to see your child’s surname and have them ready for collection.
Kangaroo – families with students in Prep to Year 2 use the Kangaroo Stop, Drop and Go zone at the front of the school.
Platypus – families with students in Years 3 to 6 may use the Platypus Stop, Drop and Go zone at the rear of the school, on Anderson Drive.
These name tags are available to collect from the office.
Music Notes from Mrs Chivers
Welcome back to Term 2!
This term, we will be working on our music assessments for this semester. All year levels will be composing a short piece of music related to our units.
Prep students will be innovating on Charlie Over The Ocean.
Year One and Year Two students will be making up new words to a song, working out the rhythm and choosing the notes to play and sing.
Our Year Three and Year Four students will be making up a little song about a place in Australia.
Students in Years Five and Six will be doing a music mashup by taking sections of music from 2 of our songs we are learning, to make a new piece of music. They will also be learning ukulele.
Year Two have an exciting music excursion coming up in week 2. We are off to Flagstone School for Music Alive, a fun, fast paced music session to encourage singing and participation. Please remember to return consent forms and pay the excursion invoice to cover the bus trip.
Our little choir have been rehearsing for our ANZAC assembly next Monday. We are always after new singers and rehearse Monday and Friday at second break in the music room.
A big shout out must go to Mrs Armstrong and Miss King for helping us with the special This Is Me project. Thanks to Our soloists, Dhruveer, Evelyn and Myra. Miss Jenkins, thanks for your work on the video to go with the song.
Keep on Making Music

Everleigh SS P&C News
Our next general meeting will be held on Monday 24 April at 6.00 pm in the Resource Centre.
Mothers' Day Stall 2023
The Everleigh State School P&C Association's Mothers' Day Stall will be held on Wednesday 10 May in the hall. Each class will visit the stall to shop during the school day.
Gifts are priced at $5, $10 or $20. Please send your child with their cash in a snap lock bag with their name and class written on it.
This is one of the P&C's annual fundraisers and is a lot of fun for the kids, as it allows them to choose something independently for their mum, grandmother or other important carer in their life. They may have the opportunity to purchase an additional gift later in the day if they have leftover money. We can't run this event without your support. Much help is needed to prepare gifts, stall set up, sales and stall pack down. Please sign up for one (or two!) of the slots by following this link - volunteersignup.org/8PA4M
The ESS P&C Association would appreciate any gift donations for the Mothers' Day Stall. Please leave any NEW item/s in the box located in the office foyer.
Funds raised will go towards much needed library books and readers for the students of Everleigh State School. Thanks for your support!
YMCA Vacation Care
Vacation care was a success with children and Educators enjoying our incursions and excursions.
We had activities from visiting the Planetarium at Mt Cootha, Bowling, to a magic show and even learnt first aid and CPR from Cube Sports. It was amazing to hear children discuss in the playground how to provide first aid to a burn or how to wrap a bandage/sling when they suspect a broken arm.
Planning for next vacation care has begun with children providing some great ideas and some feedback on the past holidays.
If you would like to enrol with YMCA please email aev@ymcabrisbane.org
YMCA Hoodie Drive
To extend on the blanket drive we did last winter, the community centres are expanding to include hoodies and The Y Everleigh will be support young people in need by collecting hoodies for our centres across the movement.
If you have any hoodies you no longer require of any size plese don’t hesitate to bring them into our centre to be passed onto the Y community centre.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
