Edition 9
Principal's Message
As we approach the end of yet another school term, I would like the opportunity to thank all of our parents and carers for your continued support. I cannot believe we have 11 school terms left of our first year! Time has flown, that is for sure. A reminder that the first day of Term 4 is Tuesday 4 October.
Next term is a busy one. We have our first School Review, 2023 Prep Start Program, and our official opening (date to be confirmed).
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
This week and next week, I am attending key professional development with other staff members. These opportunities assist us to continue focusing on ensuring every student succeeds.
The first of these learning opportunities is called Leading Learning Collaborative, based on the research of Canadian educator Dr Lynn Sharratt. This is not new work as it further supports our work on making learning visible for our students. You have read about this work in previous editions from our Deputy Principals and myself. Some of this work is related to Learning Intentions, Success Criteria and Learning and Bump It Up Walls. We look forward to sharing more of our learning with our teachers, which will result in more explicit and visible learning in classrooms.
The other session, Effective Teaching of Reading, is focused on improving how we teach students to read in the early years. Our new learnings will be shared with staff early next term and also shared with our families.
LOCKDOWN PRACTICE
On Monday we will be holding another lock down practice. Staff and students have been provided with the procedures to follow. Emergency response practices allow us to familiarize staff and students with what to do in the event of an emergency – evacuation or lockdown – and evaluate/review our responses. Such practices are kept brief and students are reassured throughout.

SPECIAL VISITOR
On Tuesday 6th September, students in Years 3 – 6 participated in an inspiring goal setting session with Mackenzie Duffy as part of the Olympics Unleashed program. Mackenzie Duffy is a world champion Sprint Kayaker. She participates in K1 500m, K2 500m, and K4 500m. She is aspiring to represent Australia in 2024 Olympics. Olympics Unleashed takes Olympians and aspiring Olympians into Australian schools to inspire and motivate students to be their personal best.
Students asked insightful questions and Mackenzie used her lived experience and stories of success and failure to motivate students to set goals and keep persisting even when things don’t go to plan. Students were encouraged to embody the Olympic values – excellence, friendship and respect - in everything they do in life whether it is on the sporting field, through The Arts or in their learning. Mackenzie’s key message was that success takes consistent effort and commitment.
PARK RIDGE STATE HIGH SCHOOL BIG BAND VISIT
Everleigh State School students were delighted to have the Park Ridge SHS Big Band perform for our Years 3-6 classes last Wednesday 7th September. Directed by Mr Michael Purtle, Park Ridge SHS interacted with students, playing a number of pieces and demonstrating the different instruments used in a jazz band. These musicians then jumped alongside our young Everleigh musicians to participate in a Concert Band workshop lead by PRSHS Wind Symphony director Mr Evan Jenkin. Our students had a great time and we look forward to future collaborations with PRSHS.
PBL
Students have been working towards their goals throughout the term and tracking these in class to see how they have been moving towards their individual goals. Students will have their recognition event of a Day Disco in the hall on Thursday during the school day. Please contact your classroom teacher if you are unsure of how your child has progressed throughout the term. Students will receive certificates of recognition for their efforts on our special parade on Friday, September 16th on our Talk Like a Pirate Day.
TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY
Childhood Cancer Support do amazing work to help families whose child has been diagnosed with cancer. Paediatric cancer is generally treated in Queensland at the Queensland Children’s Hospital. This means that families from outside Brisbane need to move their whole life if their child diagnosed to receive the appropriate care. The management plan for children with cancer varies from patient to patient but can include frequent treatments with chemotherapy and radiation which are intended to limit the spread of cancerous cells and reducing the size of the mass. One of the many side effects of treatment is reducing white blood cells which can result in sepsis where the body has no immunity to combat disease. In these cases, oncologists recommend living no further than 30 minutes from a hospital in order to address these concerns when they arise. Due to this, Childhood Cancer Support has supported families from regional and remote locations like Clermont and Ayr but also families much closer to home like Redcliffe and the Gold Coast. They provide shelter and community of support for families experiencing this.
On Friday September 16th, students are encouraged to dress like a pirate and have crazy hair to support CCS. Donations can be given online at https://fundraise.ccs.org.au/fundraisers/EverleighStateSchoolStudentCouncil

Car Park Courtesy - Second Edition
It is unfortunate that we continue to have parents/carers who are unable to follow the 2 minute parking signs in our pick up zones at the Kangaroo carpark. This week we received the following email:
'Just wanting to let you know that I’ve barely gotten a park again this arvo in the 2 minute collection zone.
Multiple cars without occupants have parked and taken up the spots. The two at the end have parked and left their cars to go into the school, but have such a small space in between them that I can’t get my car in.
It’s really frustrating for those of us that actually need to park in this section for our kids to walk to our cars. I’ve had to park my car on the bend, which is technically not a parking space, but all I can do.'
The 2 minute parking IS NOT there for your convenience! If you need to leave your car to walk in to the school to collect your child, please use the actual carpark. Our school is fitted with CCTV security cameras which covers the carpark and entrance to our school for security purposes. Should we continue to have reports of parents/carers not utilising the 2 minute parking area appropriately and safely, we will be reviewing the footage to identify the offenders.
Please be considerate of other drivers and follow these rules for the safety of our students.

Music Notes from Mrs Chivers
We are almost at the end of Term 3. Wow, hasn’t time flown.
Our Years Three to Six students have been practising their dances in music and are almost ready to perform in groups. This is the main assessment for this semester. They are also continuing recorder and other music skills.
Year One and Two are starting to think about ideas for their shape dances they will be choreographing. They will do their assessment performance next term. They are also learning new rhythms and will be hitting the boomwhackers next term.
Our Preppies have been practising really hard for their dance assessment and we will be recording them this week and next week. They are also practising their singing, beat and rhythm knowledge and learning lots of music games.
Miss McCullough, our instrumental teacher will soon be starting the recruitment process for instrumental players for next year. She will be visiting our Year Threes early next term.
Our little choir is continuing to come together every Tuesday and Thursday to sing. We are rehearsing for our next performance in Term 4. It is not too late for students to join and we are always on the lookout for extra singers. This is a safe space to try singing in a group and there are even opportunities for some solo moments. Students from Years Two to Six are welcome.
Have a great last week of term and a relaxing holiday.
Music Rocks!
